FAQS
GMT is an open source collection of ~60 tools for manipulating geographic and Cartesian data sets (including filtering, trend fitting, gridding, projecting, etc.) and producing PDF illustrations ranging from simple x-y plots via contour maps to artificially illuminated surfaces and 3-D perspective views.

GMT supports about 30 map projections and transformations and comes with support data such as coastlines, rivers, and political boundaries. GMT is developed and maintained by Paul Wessel and Walter H. F. Smith with help from a global set of volunteers, and is supported by the National Science Foundation.

Our stand-alone "OpenOSX GMT" will have you running GMT 4.3.1 with Thorsten Becker and Alexander Braun's iGMT 1.2 software for a user interface, complete with an embedded world-wide data set with several layers including: elevation, sea-floor age, gravity and more. All complete and usable with zero installation.

GMT has been in development for 7 years and is used by researchers world-wide; while not a "heavy-weight" GIS like GRASS, it does offer a comprehensive toolset, that no GIS is complete without.

In addition, our stand-alone application with an embedded global dataset makes it an ideal tool for education for all level users of GIS. We have also included a mini getting started tutorial that will get you up and running to plot the maps like the above screen shot.

GMT's commands primarily use "XY", "Z", and sometimes "W" data. Included is a full set of commands to import this data from ASCII and binary tabular files into binary (or optionally ASCII) grid files. Which may then be utilized by GMT's core programs.
