The
GIMP, The GNU Image Manipulation Program
Peter Mattis and Spencer Kimball, students at UC Berkeley
at the time, were working together in a compiling class and
wrote the original GIMP source as an alternate assignment
to the "impossibly
boring assignment" they had been assigned. Developers
from around the world have subsequently contributed to the
GIMP and written plugins, making GIMP a viable alternative
to non-UNIX commercial software.
